Angel-ed

1 Peter 1:12 New International Version (NIV)

12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you, when they spoke of the things that have now been told you by those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven. Even angels long to look into these things.

It must have been a tad disappointing for the prophets to realize that the the beneficiaries of the fulfillment of the prophecies revealed to them were not their generation or the generation that came after them. All their works were meant to serve us in this present generation. What seems amusing and fascinating in the text above is the last sentence that says even angels long to look into these things.

To set the tone here, it is certain that we are pertaining to the gospel. So basically, it’s saying the angels of the heavens can’t get enough of the gospel; they long to look into it.

Every time we get ourselves something new say a new phone, shoes, or a make up, we long to look and stare at it. We can’t get over it and sometimes we sleep with it. But give it a few weeks our affection lessens to some degree.

But the case of the angels is quite different. Meaning to say, even in an an eternal time frame, the angels are hooked, absorbed, fascinated, mesmerized, and amazed by the gospel. They simply can not get their eyes off it and for someone who really knows God, the gospel is simply jaw dropping.

The gospel displays the uniqueness of God. It portrays a work that is beyond achievable by anyone. The gospel encapsulates the power of God as shown in the way he weaved His justice and love. For the angels, it’s simply unbelievable!

The rather staggering thought here is this one: the angels are not even the recipients of the gospel! Here you have these heavenly beings awed by the gospel, addicted with it, celebrators of it, yet the implication and application of the gospel is not really for them. The angels are a fan base, a groupie of the gospel simply because the gospel is laudable.

Final thought: If the angels are not recipients of the gospel yet they long to look into it, then how much more should we? We who are the recipients of the gospel. The gospel was authored and woven for us. That itself is incredibly humbling, not to mention flattering. My prayer is that we would be a people who would live a life of gratitude and humility knowing and understanding how much we have been lavished by God.
